As a massage therapist with over 24 years of experience, my journey has been anything but ordinary. From working in spas and sports clinics to becoming a clinic director and teacher, I have learned that education is essential in the field of muscular wellness. In this blog post, I will share my experiences and insights, highlighting the importance of education for massage therapists and how it can empower us all.
Early Beginnings in Massage Therapy
My career in massage therapy began in diverse settings where I quickly developed a passion for sports massage. Working under a skilled sports therapist in Northern Utah, I refined my techniques and grasped the essential aspects of muscle work. This experience sparked my desire to dig deeper into the medical side of muscular wellness, leading me to pursue additional education as a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA).
The Importance of Education
While in school, I gained invaluable experience through apprenticeships in youth and elderly care clinics. One influential figure in my journey was a holistic Physical Therapist in Provo, Utah, whom I ended up working for for several years. This mentor expanded my understanding of holistic practices and guided me through unique continuing education courses. I learned from esteemed professionals, such as physical therapists, chiropractors and osteopaths from Europe. Their insights, often reserved only for advanced medical roles, enriched my learning and broadened my perspective on muscular health.
Bridging the Gap in Massage Therapy
Throughout my education, I noticed a significant gap in the knowledge transfer within the massage therapy community. Many advanced techniques I learned were not taught to massage therapists, who are key players in muscular care. This realization drove me to bridge this gap. For instance, essential palpation skills that enhance recovery were often not passed on to the very professionals who could make the most impactful use of them.
Developing Effective Modalities
With the knowledge I gained, I began experimenting with different modalities to find the most effective ways to treat injuries and alleviate pain. By combining techniques like trigger point and myofascial release, I created a comprehensive approach that yielded exceptional results. For example, clients suffering from chronic pain reported relief in over 92% of cases after just a few sessions of my integrated method. This was not just about easing discomfort; it was about enhancing their overall quality of life.
The Need for Knowledge Sharing
As my referral-based clientele expanded, I realized I could not assist everyone alone. The need to share my knowledge became clear. This realization led me to start teaching other massage therapists, aiming to spread these valuable skills and techniques widely. For example, in my first workshop, I taught 20 therapists how to effectively use specific techniques, demonstrating how they could enhance their practice and better serve their clients. Statistically, over 62% of the clients getting a massage even in a spa setting are hoping for some type of pain relief. In my career, I have taught hundreds of students how to better help their clients with the very issues they are coming in for. I only have two hands. This needs to be shared within the education of massage therapists to give them the tools they need to succeed in this area. This is where I want to continue my work.
Creating a Welcoming Environment for Students
When we opened our clinic, I was excited to see many prior students seeking guidance. We were eager to provide a supportive environment for learning and growth. Every therapist here has been trained in advanced modalities to better serve our clients. Our mission is to foster education and empowerment within the field of massage therapy, helping others to reach their potential.

The Impact of Education on the Massage Community
The response from students has been overwhelmingly positive. Many express gratitude for the chance to learn advanced techniques that significantly enhance their practice. By equipping them with the tools needed to address complex muscular issues, we raise the standard of care in our community. Recently, a group of students I taught reported a 50% or higher increase in positive feedback from clients after implementing new techniques from my courses. This also increases their retention rates. Building a clientele is essential to be successful in this field.
Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future
Reflecting on my journey from therapist to educator fills me with gratitude for the experiences that shaped my career. My goal is to continue expanding knowledge, ensuring massage therapists are well-prepared to handle the diverse needs of their clients. I envision a future where every therapist is equipped with advanced skills, leading to better outcomes for clients.

Embrace the Call to Share Knowledge
The journey from therapist to educator has transformed my life. I am convinced that by sharing knowledge and promoting continuous learning, we can elevate massage therapy as a profession. I encourage fellow therapists to actively seek education, embrace new techniques, and share insights with their peers.
As we move forward, I invite you to join me on this mission. Whether you are an experienced therapist or just starting, there is always more to learn. Let us collaborate to transform the landscape of massage therapy and ensure everyone receives the care they deserve.
